Wellbeing in the Workplace

Wellbeing in the workplace is no longer just a preference, it is a necessity – especially when working from home. Many employees were not prepared for the sudden shift from working at the office 5 days a week to working from home. While there were short-term changes that needed to be made such as new desk layouts and additional monitors, it is important to remember the long-term effects of certain postures, positions and routines. Important factors to have in your workspace include comfortable screen views, more movement, extra workspace and an ergonomically friendly posture.

Daily Movement is Key

In fact, the American Cancer Society published a study in 2010  which demonstrates the shocking truth. 123,216 individuals were followed for 13 years (56.6% women, 43.4% men) and those who were inactive, meaning they sat for more than 6 hours per day, were 94% more likely to die compared to those who sat less than 3 hours per day. It has also been proven those who sit for long periods of time have an increased risk of disease.

This demonstrates that even small movements throughout the day can make a large difference. Our bodies truly are remarkable machines. Building an ergonomic workspace is key to add movement throughout the workday. Other ways to enhance wellbeing while working from home include going for a walk outside to get fresh air, exercise, and eating healthy meals.
